The 1978 Château Cheval Blanc, which was served from magnum, has an endearing and you could almost describe it as "dainty," iron-scented nose with undergrowth and just a speck of Moroccan spice coming through. It is pleasant, even if I noticed how it lost some vigor over the course of 45 minutes. The palate is medium-bodied with tobacco-infused black fruit and a crisp line of acidity, though not a complex Saint Emilion. It is certainly what you might describe as "old school" Claret, because it is unashamedly austere and foursquare, yet you will still find yourself finishing the glass and pouring another. Not a Cheval for the hedonists for sure, but it deserves respect all the same. Tasted March 2015.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2005 France 3.0 Liter RP96

Producer Name:Chateau Lafite
Robert Parker (RP): 96
Having tasted the 2005 Château Lafite-Rothschild several times both blind and non-blind, it comes across as a First Growth politely requesting more time to "settle". Here, from an ex-château bottle tasted in Bordeaux, it delivers that graphite, pencil-box bouquet that unfurls gradually in the glass, biding its time, graceful but not intense. Parallel to some of its fellow 2005s, it is developing a little more spice, namely thyme and sage, than I recall. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, to wit, a sophisticated Pauillac that priorities elegance and poise over intensity of fruit—in keeping with Lafite Rothschild's style. You come away with the sense that it will take its time and decline, giving away a great deal in its primacy, even if it is still more approachable than the 2005 Latour for example. Therefore, I would be inclined to set this aside for several more years. Tasted November 2014.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2000 5L

Bordeaux Blend Red, Pauillac, Medoc, Bordeaux, France

Bottle

   SKU: BORDR-000708
   Vintage: 2000
   Color: Red
   Varietal: Bordeaux Blend
Btls Available:1
Btls in Case:3
Producer Name:Chateau Mouton Rothschild
Robert Parker (RP): 96+
Perhaps the most beautiful packaging ever on a Bordeaux bottle, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild literally produced a work of art in the gold-engraved bottle of 2000 Mouton Rothschild. Of course, one can’t drink the glass, but this is a top-flight Mouton Rothschild, eclipsed only by the 2006 and 2009. A rich, tannic, earthy style, with loads of creme de cassis and floral notes, the final blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot is a full-bodied wine with plenty of coffee, earth, chocolatey notes, and still plenty of tannin to resolve. I gave it an anticipated maturity range of 2015-2050 back in 2003, and that looks on target.
